Wake 'N Shake Goes Virtual in 2020

For this year’s Wake ‘N Shake, a 12-hour dance marathon organized by Wake Forest students, participants joined in from places across the country instead of gathering on campus to raise money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund.

We'd like to look back at the history of Wake 'N Shake, as seen by Wake Forest photographer Ken Bennett and his student photographers over the years. Story by Laurie D. Willis, Office of Communications and External Relations. (See footnotes for complete list of photographers.)

2006: The Beginning

Sponsored by the Office of Civic & Community Engagement (OCCE), Wake ‘N Shake started in 2006 with 300 dancers raising over $30,000 for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund.

Growing for a Decade

Wake 'N Shake grew from that small beginning with help from Mike Ford in the Campus Life office and the support of hundreds of students helping to plan and execute the event over the years, and thousands more dancing.

Wake 'N Shake Today

For the last few years, Wake 'N Shake has moved into the new Sutton Center 4th Floor Gymnasium. Last year, the dance-a-thon hosted more than 1,400 students, faculty and staff and raised a total of $431,170. So far 1,000 people have registered for this year’s virtual event, and organizers expect to reach or exceed the $400,000 goal.

Who Are You Dancing For?

The dancers and organizers never forget why they are dancing: to remember loved ones lost to cancer, and to raise money for cancer research.
