Wake Forest University hosted a moderated conversation with jazz master Branford Marsalis on Sunday, November 9, 2025 in Brendle Recital Hall.
Jacqui Carrasco, professor and chair of Wake Forest’s Department of Music and education professor Ali Sakkal joined Marsalis for the conversation.
During the event, Marsalis was presented with the Maya Angelou Artist-in-Residence Award, which was established to bring world-renowned artists to campus for engagement with students, faculty, staff and the wider community.
Branford Marsalis was named Wake Forest University’s 2025 Maya Angelou Artist-in-Residence in June 2025. A globally celebrated artist known for his unparalleled contributions to jazz, classical music, film, and Broadway, he brought his vast experience and creative spirit to the Wake Forest campus.
As part of the residency, Marsalis led a masterclass and taught a music theory course on jazz styles.
